Adelaide Town Hall is one of South Australia’s most recognisable heritage buildings and has been at the centre of civic life since it was completed in 1866.

Designed by architects Edmund Wright and E.J. Woods after a public competition, the building was constructed using local stone and showcases elegant Victorian architecture.

Originally created as both a seat of local government and a venue for public gatherings, it has hosted significant moments in the state’s history, including meetings connected to Australia’s federation movement in the late 1800s.

Today, it remains an enduring symbol of Adelaide’s civic pride and cultural heritage, blending historic grandeur with contemporary use.

Over the decades, Adelaide Town Hall has welcomed many famous visitors and played host to iconic public moments.

Perhaps most famously, The Beatles appeared on the balcony in 1964, drawing a crowd of up to 300,000 people (one of the largest audiences of their career).

Royal visitors have also featured prominently, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1983, while global figures such as the Dalai Lama have addressed audiences in the Auditorium.

These events highlight the building’s ongoing role as a central gathering place for both international figures and the local community.

Grand Pipe Organ of Adelaide Town Hall

A standout feature of the Town Hall is its grand pipe organ, considered a “celebrity” in its own right.  The first organ was installed in 1877 following community fundraising efforts, but over time it was replaced with a modern instrument.

The current organ, built by J.W. Walker & Sons and installed in 1990, is a world-class concert instrument that attracts performers from around the globe.  It continues to play an important role in Adelaide’s cultural life, with regular concerts held for the public.

Today, Adelaide Town Hall remains a vibrant and active venue.

It is still the home of the Adelaide City Council, hosting meetings, official ceremonies and civic functions.

Beyond its civic role, it serves as a major cultural and events space, known for its excellent acoustics and performances such as those by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

With multiple historic rooms available for hire, the building hosts everything from concerts and exhibitions to weddings, conferences and community events.

In this way, Adelaide Town Hall continues to be what it has always been—a place for people to come together in the heart of the city.
